skilled trades and career pathways 2026

Ontario's economy depends on skilled trades, from construction to electrical, HVAC, and manufacturing, but many youth lack clear, accessible pathways to those careers. Hard Hats United hears this directly from youth who face systemic barriers, a lack of accessible information, limited employer connections, and workplace bias for underrepresented groups.

Hard Hats United’s Skilled Trades and Career Pathways 2026 is a one-day, city-wide event connecting youth across Mississauga to employers, pre-apprenticeship programs, and hands-on taster workshops in the skilled trades.

Through live demonstrations, employer booths, short career workshops, and a mobile tool-lending showcase, the Expo lowers barriers to entry, celebrates diverse tradespeople, and creates concrete pathways to apprenticeships and jobs.

The Expo responds to that gap by bringing employers and training resources into a welcoming, stigma-free environment where youth can ask questions and try tools in a safe setting. The Expo prioritizes youth who face barriers (youth from lower-income neighbourhoods, newcomers, women and marginalized gender identities seeking trades careers).

Frequently Asked Questions

We know families, students, and teachers often have questions when they are exploring something new. The skilled trades open the door to so many different pathways, and we want this page to make it easier to understand what the Expo is all about, who it is for, and how it can help young people think about their future.

Whether you are a student wondering what to expect, a parent hoping to support your child, or a teacher looking for meaningful opportunities for your class, these questions are here to give you a clearer picture of the event. Our goal is to make this experience welcoming, practical, and easy to navigate so everyone can feel confident taking part.

What is the Skilled Trades and Career Pathways Expo?

It is a hands-on event that introduces students to careers in the skilled trades, including both practical trade work and other important roles like entrepreneurship, administration, safety, and leadership.

Who is the event for?

The Expo is mainly for Grade 8 and Grade 9 students, but it is also helpful for parents, teachers, guidance counsellors, and anyone supporting a young person’s future.

What will students do at the Expo?

Students will visit booths, meet tradespeople, try simple hands-on activities, ask questions, and collect stamps in their Expo Passport as they explore different career paths.

Do students need any prior experience in the skilled trades?

No experience is needed at all. The Expo is designed for students who are curious and want to learn more, even if they are just beginning to think about careers.

Why should a student attend?

Because it is a chance to discover careers they may never have considered, meet real people in the field, and learn about jobs that can lead to stable work, further training, and even business ownership.

How can parents or guardians support their child’s interest in the trades?

The best support is to keep an open mind, ask questions, and encourage them to explore different options. The Expo is a great first step for families to learn together.

How can teachers and schools get involved?

Teachers and schools can bring students to the event, help encourage participation, and connect with us if they would like to explore partnership or future student opportunities.

Is the Expo only about hands-on trade jobs?

No. While the event highlights hands-on careers, it also shows students the many other pathways connected to the trades, including planning, estimating, safety, logistics, business, and administration.
